Who am I?
I am a DBS checked biology tutor and a Russell Group University Lecturer. I have taught secondary biology for over 20 years, teaching all UK GCSE and A level exam boards and the IB, helping over 250 students achieve their university entry goals, gaining or exceeding their predicted grades, and succeeding in obtaining interviews and offers.
Background
My background is as a medical research scientist and university teacher. My research, funded by the MRC and Wellcome Trust was in the area of peptides and inflammatory drug development and I have authored over 50 peer reviewed publications and conference papers. I am currently an invited Senior Lecturer at King’s College London where I teach, assess and organise biomedical and medical courses and develop e-learning resources.
I have published many books on medicines for the public including The Royal Society’s Medicines: the Comprehensive Guide (Bloomsbury) which sold over 2 million copies.
Tutoring experience
I have provided thousands of hours of one-to-one tuition to secondary school and numerous undergraduate students from the UK and abroad, both f2f and online. My secondary students range from high achievers destined for Oxbridge entry to students who simply need a grade. I have taught high-income and low-income students, neurodiverse students and students whose first language isn’t English. I have taught the daughter of a princess and the sons of rock stars; and I have taught students displaced from their countries and those who fund their tuition themselves.
As a secondary and higher education consultant I was the Royal Society of Biology's representative for biology, which included advising on UK biology and science exam specification development.
My approach
Limiting the number of students I take on allows me to give my full attention to each and every one; every lesson is prepared individually according to individual learning style and need. Motivation, diligence and drive are the only criteria I look for from students. Patience, understanding, respect and confidence building is what they get from me. The main 'thank you I receive from parents is for the life-long learning and confidence my students gain from their time with me.
I am based on the edge of the beautiful South Downs in West Sussex and sometimes on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne in stunning Northumberland.
